Homophobic Hate Crimes on the RiseThe national page for the National Organization for Men Against Sexism reports that “hate crimes based on sexual orientation remain the third most common type of hate crime,” coming in only behind race and religion.In her article on the subject, Jessica Green reports that “statistics from the FBI have shown an 11 percent rise in reports of homophobic hate crime across America in the last year.”Green further reports that “roughly a third of the cases were physical attacks, another third were intimidation and the remaining third were vandalism or property damage.”The Matthew Shepard Foundation issued a comment stating that “the continuing, steady emergence of extremely violent anti-LGBT hate crimes in recent weeks . . . argues in favor of taking the increase seriously and redoubling prevention efforts.”
